A Flemish tradition from the seventeenth century (°1626). People depict the life of Jesus in various scenes. On top of this, a number of (anonymous) people dressed in penitential robes (cilicium) take this opportunity to ‘atone’ for their sins. They display this in public, every year in Veurne, where I live. It is accompanied by a popular festival. I am particularly drawn to the surreal context; the combination of people and events is a constant source of wonder. Daily.
