Vlaamse humor. Of surrealisme. Of iets daar tussenin. Behalve een autocratische instelling is de Vlaamse katholieke kerk ook soms een bronnetje van onvrijwillige humor. Ongewild misschien, maar de omwonenden zorgen dan wel voor een vrolijke noot om te kraken…
Maybe I am mistaken but isn’t there a school “path” called “Humanities” in Belgium? Like what we the french would call “litterary”? Literature, philosphy, histore, etc. As opposed to Scientific”?
Correct; it’s a secondary school option, to have less mathematics and general science and to choose for ‘soft’ sciences (psychology, philosphy,…). I did languages (Latin and Greek).
Yes indeed. It has changed its name to Luca, School of Arts but its spirituality remains ‘old school’. Some obscure people in charge control the ins and outs. A few years ago I tried a master education – as an aged student – and I failed – a shortage of one single point. My personal spirituality didn’t fit with the mandatory mentality. The jury’s report (which wasn’t meant to be handed to me) is framed and shown to my friends as spoils of war ๐ I still want to publicize it one day – people won’t believe what they read…. ๐ Ever since I became more intelligent.
Well, not exactly as an ‘undergrad’ in a legal sense (I hope – my students would have reasons to complain). At the time I tried to get an extra master degree – a few years ago, I wasn’t just led by pure greed (earning more money for the same work) but I also was eager to learn more about the things which I was teaching about myself. By people (I presumed) who were educated enough to generate more and new impulses in my conservative photographic language. I found the opposite – one of the ‘teachers’ even told me he hated photography ๐
But still I learned a lot : in the local Belgian art world ‘art’ is a mere lubricant for rewarding the membership of obscure networks. The piece of art is a simple x-factor – one can fill it up according to a vague spirituality. To me it’s obvious -as a Christian – the local art scene is an occupied territory, where sincere artists are pulverized or assimilated. Analyzing actual events in this small gild – where ‘omerta’ is the main catch-phrase and anonymity is a benefit – I honestly prefer to remain a daily observer. In that sense certainly a conscious and blessed ‘undergrad’ ๐
Raymond Aron, a french political analyst once a wrote a book named “Le spectateur engagรฉ” (The involved spectator, but then you probably speak or understand french). Yes, I prefer to be an observer. (I dabbled in student politics in undergrad and graduate school. Eventually resigned as I was incapable of… accepting the cynicism of politics. ๐
And Art, most certainly is an obscure network thing.
Take care.
Brian
My bitter disillusion was, at the same time, a moment of awareness : a thing of art is not made by an artist, but by members of a network, who all take profit out of deception. My ‘chagrin’ grew even infinite when I witnessed the fact that academic people (in art education) are strongly involved in this deception. But never mind, I consider this awareness as a blessing.
I presume ‘Saint Luc’ is a different school. ‘Luca, School of Arts’ is – as I wrote you – led by ‘teachers’ (Agalia Konrad, Marie Pascale Gildemyn, Steven Humblet, and some obscure other experts). But, trust me, they have no relevance when it comes to sincere art-experience. Even Google knows…
Kerkhof ‘Den Biechtstoel’.. ?

๐ Goed gezien.
In katholiek Vlaanderen durf ik niet anders dan te ‘zien’…. Maar ik hou er geen vrienden aan over ๐
So you are taking photos again?
รa va mieux? Un peu?
Time heals. Slowly.
‘Best.

๐ I’m daily taking pictures – I’m addicted to photography. It’s all about controlling my world…
There are and have been far worse attempts at “controlling” the world. ๐
Tot ziens Luc.
It’s a therapy for survivors of an art education…
“Les Humanitรฉs”?
Euh…?

Latin Grec? Compliments. I only did Latin. But we must be one of the few last dinosaurs to have studied the ancient tongues… ๐
Not here in Belgium – Studying Latin and Greek guarantees a job as a doctor, lawyer or …. a teacher of photography.
Haha! I like the idea of a photography teacher better than that of a lawyer. (Some of my in-laws are lawyers…) ๐
I meant a ‘famous’ art school in Brussels, where spiritual terrorists feel comfortable – Luca, School of Arts ๐
Would that be “Saint-Luc”, where I believe most of the major Belgian cartoonists learned their “trade”?

Some times not studying is the best path… But to make sure I understand: you did study there as an “undergrad” (as americans would say?)?

Agree totally. Many or most people go through life unaware of their surroundings. It is a burden sometimes but a blessing always. Take care.
So, regardless of how many great Comic” artists came of that school, it still is very… “conservative”?

I do trust you. ๐
