Yes, I see. It’s a nice shot, but the story almost becomes an obligation for the viewer, whereas, in the other, The suggestion of a story invites the viewer into the portrait without obscuring it. At least that’s how I see it. Is that what you meant?
That’s right. I guess the story, the narrative value becomes more prominent and more intriguing in this picture. Who is the person in the picture? Is she/he the lady herself, the younger version or is he/she someone else? The answer turns someone into an extremely vulnerable person. That’s why I normally would have never published the picture, although the lady asked me clearly to publish it. The story itself (suppose I would reveal it) would erase all possible suggestions and would force the viewer to appreciate the picture. As a photographer I just had the push a button and to listen; my artistic contribution to this picture is limited to a certain technical composure. I hope the viewer has his/her own story, looking at this picture…

Ik ben een gelukkige ervaringsexpert, zowel in het ontmoeten van authentieke – kwetsbare mensen (wiens beeltenissen ik soms niet publiceer, uit respect) als in het onbedoeld ontmaskeren van de malle figuren, die die kunstscène als showcase van een dubieuze spiritualiteit controleren. Je wil hen niet kennen, maar eens je hun ‘fond’ begrijpt, lijkt elk onvervalst handelen puur genieten. Ik hoop niet al te raadselachtig uit de hoek te komen – anders verklaar ik je wel een en ander in privĂ© modus.
